Bike Patrol

The Brenham Police Department Bicycle Patrol originated in May of 1995. The pilot program began with officers using their own personal bicycles as well as purchasing their own uniforms and equipment. The program was deemed successful after the apprehension of a burglar and several "SURPRISE" drug-related arrests were made by the unit. The police department then purchased two fully marked and outfitted Raleigh Police bicycles through grant funding. The unit receives tremendous support from the community; the citizens have donated funds for the purchase of additional bicycles. To date, the Brenham Police Department Bike Unit has six marked bikes.

The Bike Patrol is currently a part-time duty that primarily involves local parades, fairs, sporting events and other special functions. However, requests by citizens and local businesses owners have sparked an increase in the unit's use, particularly during busy holidays and in congested shopping areas during peak hours. Currently there are nine members of the bike patrol. All of the members are certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA). The bike patrol is planning to increase the number of bikes and attribute the camaraderie and enthusiasm of the officers in the unit for its success. There is currently a waiting list of officers wanting to become members.

The Bike Patrol has its own specialized uniform, consisting of black bike shorts or long plants, black or while cool-max police shirt, red and black reflective police jacket, nylon duty gear and a helmet. It is MANDATORY that all bike patrol officers wear a helmet equipped with a radio headset.

The Brenham Police Department Bicycle Patrol operates under the supervision of Sgt. Dant Lange, who has been with the department since January, 1994. For more information about the Bike Patrol, you can contact Sgt. Lange at 979-337-7331 or dlange@ci.brenham.tx.us.
