Animal Control
The City of Brenham provides animal control through its Humane Services Department. Animal Control officers are available to respond to calls for service Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They may respond to calls after 5 p.m. and on weekends and holidays for emergencies only; those emergencies consist of an animal bite, picking up injured animals that are still alive and assisting with animals in a vehicle where the driver is placed under arrest or has been involved in an accident.
The City of Brenham adopted an animal control ordinance to regulate the keeping of animals and fowls within the city to promote the health, safety and welfare of the public as is provided by state law. That ordinance is what allows the City to require animals to be licensed and confined to the property. It also defines the term "stray", which in turn, allows animal control officers to pick up, trap and/or remove animals from private property. To read the ordinance, click here. State law requires that all domestic animals over the age of four months be vaccinated for rabies. The City requires all animals to be vaccinated and licensed on an annual basis. Licenses are available through the Brenham Humane Services and the local veterinary clinics.
The Humane Services department operates both the Donald G. Austin Memorial Animal Shelter, a temporary housing facility and the Craig C. Cantey Adoption Center, where animals are available for adoption. The Craig C. Cantey Adoption Center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10:00-5:00 p.m..
